With the closure of the Bauhaus under Nazi pressure in 1933, Josef Albers emigrated to the United States and joined the faculty of Black Mountain College, Noth Carolina, where he ran the painting program until 1949.

Yvonne Rainer was greatly influenced by the work of John Cage, composer and collaborator with Merce Cunningham, referring to his “mixture of Duchamp and Zen Buddhism”. Chance operations, a structuring methodology used by Cage, were taken up by Cunningham in his choreographic work.
